 Before reading the article, I thought the history of mathematics could mainly be used to provide context and make mathematics lessons more engaging, for example, through short stories about mathematicians or how mathematical ideas developed. I also thought that it could introduce students to ancient cultures and show how mathematics developed in different civilizations. This could be especially interesting in a multicultural society such as Canada, where students from different cultural backgrounds might be interested in introducing mathematicians and mathematical achievements from their own countries. Several examples in the article made me stop and think. One example I found particularly interesting was the Pythagorean theorem, where students can explore seven different proofs developed in different cultures. Three things that surprised me!

  My three surprising points from the reading are: The Book's Title: First, the title is a metaphor taken from the ancient Indian text, which compares the supreme importance of mathematics to the crests on a peacock's head—showing that modern mathematics is a collective achievement built upon contributions from diverse non-European civilizations. Persian Scholars: Second, Iranian scientists like Ibn Sina and al-Khwarizmi were introduced as Arab, even though both of them are Iranian, and the reason their works are in Arabic is that they lived during the period after the Arab invasion of Iran, when Islam was a religion imposed on Iranians and the language of scientific texts changed to Arabic in many cases. Solving Equations: Al-Khwarizmi's basic methods of balancing and simplifying equations (known as al-jabr and al-muqabala) are still the core rules we use today to solve algebra problems and create computer algorithms.

Did Mesopotamian scribers have algebra?

  When looking at ancient mathematical texts, I found it fascinating that Mesopotamian scribes actually had a working form of algebra long before formal symbols existed . Instead of using letters like x and y, they relied on what we call rhetorical algebra , telling step-by-step stories in words , and syncopated algebra , where they used everyday geometric terms like "length" ( ush ) or "breadth" ( sag ) for unknowns . Reading through their problem-solving methods made me realize how much they achieved through pure logic and geometric placeholders rather than shorthand symbols . Thinking about this in relation to our own students, it feels very similar to how they learn today . When students first encounter word problems, they usually start by writing everything out in plain words—just like rhetorical algebra—before using informal labels, and finally moving to symbolic equations.
